Joseph F. Dolan Papers. 1956 - 1968. Correspondence and Memorandums, 1956 - 1968

1956-1968

This series contains correspondence and memorandums from Joseph F. Dolan's time as a lawyer in Denver, Colorado and as an Administrative Assistant to Robert F. Kennedy. Dolan's knowledge and interest in the Democratic Party at both the state and national level is reflected in his correspondence with Theodore Sorensen and others interested in the career of Senator John F. Kennedy. Dolan often made suggestions for the improvement of Senator Kennedy's political standing in Colorado. Several memoranda written by Dolan compare the efficiency of Robert Kennedy's Senate office to that of other senators, particularly Jacob Javits and Edward Kennedy. Contained in this series are specific memoranda which analyze various senate committees and list staff members and their specific assignments. Also contained in the series are memoranda Dolan sent to Senator Robert Kennedy on anti-smoking legislation, poverty programs, New York politics, and the day-to-day dealing with constituents. The series also records some of Robert Kennedy's speaking engagements on both the New York and national scenes. There also are a few polls conducted on a state-by-state basis on the possibility of Robert Kennedy's candidacy for the presidency. In some of his memoranda, Dolan suggests that Senator Robert Kennedy write a book on education which would be a useful campaign tool similar to John Kennedy's "A Nation of Immigrants." The result was Robert Kennedy's series of essays, "To Seek a Newer World."
